The Right Way to Keep Tulsa Florist Flowers Fresh

Are you tired of having beautiful cut flowers wither and die within a couple days of their arrival from your Tulsa florist? Try the following tips to help cut flowers last longer.

A harvested flower will stay fresher longer when you cut the ends of the stems off with a very sharp knife or pair of scissors and plunge them immediately into water. When you cut the stem do so at a slant, because a slanted cut exposes more of the stem’s interior surface area, allowing it to absorb more water. Also remember to remove any leaves that will be under water.

Do not remove thorns from roses – whether they came from your
local Tulsa florist’s shop or you cut them in your garden. Dethorning the stems of your lovely roses, will not just shorten their life but kill them quickly.

Remember to change the water every two days and to keep your cut flowers out of direct sunlight. If you can move your flowers to a cool place at night the better they will fare. Remember that they have been in refrigeration from the time they were cut at the flower farm until the day you purchased them or they arrived via flower delivery. Tulsa summers are hot, so this can be a challenge for those without air conditioning in their home.

Never mix Daffodils and other Tulsa florist flowers in the same vase. Daffodil stems give off a compound that is toxic to other flowers. If your flowers do not come with food packets, you can use regular flower food. Some say to add sugar to the water, and this does help, but not as well as flower food.

The food packets most Tulsa florists give you for your flowers contain chemicals to kill bacteria, along with nutrients, a form of sugar and an acidifier. Acid is needed to help move the water up the stem, and the nutrients and sugar serve as the plant’s food. The practice of cutting a fresh end on the stem every day allows as much access as possible to more than just water.

Remember excessive warm or dry storage conditions, air bubbles in the water and bacteria in the water will all make flowers from any Tulsa florist wilt quicker. Cutting the ends of the stems afresh and on an angle daily, when you change the water in their vase prolongs the beauty of your blooms. Just this and the flower food alone will surprisingly keep them fresh and crisp longer than any other trick you’re heard about.
